Hi there, it’s Kristy Malone at Refining Design.

I was recently in New York City, staying in downtown Manhattan, and of course I had to check out some of the furniture stores that they had there.

I couldn’t leave without seeing some of the great finds. I was there and I want to share some of them with you.

In particular, for the sophisticated modern man, who’s trying to break free from his traditional man cave, I found some really amazing items.

There’s always a common theme in each of the showroom floors that I saw and some of the layouts that caught my eye.

That common thread was the color black, and black to me is a really important color when you’re designing any space.

So, even if you just have one hint of black it really helps ground the space. Even if everything else around it is light in color.

One thread of black can really just make an impact. You can either have a hint of black and a lighter space around or you can even have some black and then incorporate some darker accessories as well, and still, both looks can have a really sophisticated, edgy kind of look and be super modern and sophisticated.

I especially feel that black is important when you’re trying to do a modern gentleman’s space.

You could have a lot of browns, you can have different accents that way but always still having a bit of black is very sophisticated.

So stay tuned. I’m going to be posting some of my finds on my next blog and think you’ll find them really great to see how you can incorporate some of these interesting pieces and still have some dark heavy pieces without looking too cumbersome and cold.
